Great Software if You Are Trained to Use It

Opmerkingen: At my workplace we needed a database but did not have the funds to purchase one but with Excel, we were able to meet our needs. Through using the conditional formatting, IF/THEN functionality and sorting we were able to build something that met our needs and saved us money!

Microsoft Excel has great functionality and can do a great diversity of tasks from simple math to complex data tracking tools. My two favorite functions of Excel include IF/THEN functionality and the ability to sort. The IF/THEN function is especially useful because if it's broad applications. For example if I had a two columns across the top with the categories "Name" and "Paid?" then I can make it so that my spread sheet would turn a persons name red if the response in the paid box next to their name said no. I also love being able to use this function in the application of using a date. For example, if a date is past, then it can flag the date. This is useful when trying to meet deadlines and staying on a timeline. This tool can also be used to clean up your spreadsheet. For example if you want to clear all data from a certain date on, you can do that with the IF/THEN tool. My other favorite thing about this software is the ability to sort. This is especially useful when you have large amounts of data because it allows you to tailor what you want to see and it will only show the data you've selected while still having all the other data hidden. Turn the filters off and all your data is still there. When using these two favorites of mine in tandem you get even more use out of this software.

I took an intermediate excel class and an advanced excel class in my workplace and those were extremely helpful to understand how this software works. I feel like anyone can jump into it and figure out very basic functionality of this software but to reach the full potential of excel some training is needed. The uses of MS Excel are endless! Working within the spreadsheet you can do so many things. For instance, keeping logs or running totals or data. You can then turn that data into various types of graphs. They have so many templates to choose from to get you started. With these templates, you can make budgets, to do lists, planners, calendars, financial reports, loan calculators, resumes, contact lists, financial models, statistical analyses and even keep track of your taxes! I have so many various types of spreadsheets I use. I even created a custom fat loss calculator for my clients! Like I said MS Excels capabilities are endless!

One of the things I dislike about MS Excel is it can be expensive when upgrading from an old version to a new version. But for what it does and how much you'll probably use it, it can be worth the cost. Sometimes there are issues when someone with an older version is getting shared data from a newer version. When this happens there can be conflict and the software may not work right. Also, there is somewhat of a learning curve especially when it comes to using formulas. I have had to look up youtube videos numerous times on how to use certain formulas which did take time.

MS Excel

Opmerkingen: I love Excel. I’m not as good at using the complex mathematical functions as some users who are in the accounting profession, but I do alright. I showed a co-worker the other day how to use the Goal Seek function and she loves it and it saved her a tom of time trying to figure out their enrollment target. I recently taught myself how to create Macros to help me save time and I did it by watching an online video, and it was fairly easy. My boss was so impressed she wants me to teach others in our office how to create their own Marcos too.

I use Excel almost every day, even when I am not at work. I find it easy to use and allows me to sort, filter, and color code anything I am working on. I do not just use Excel for accounting or data manipulation – I use Excel probably more than I use Word, if you can believe that. I love using it for lists and organizing information I want to keep track of. I even will email myself Excel files so I can access them on my smart phone when I am out shopping or whatever. I just finished making my Christmas card list and of course I used Excel. Now I can turn that sheet into my check off list so I can keep track of who I have or haven’t mailed a card to yet, and even add a column for the dates mailed and if I use more than one card I can keep track of which card I send to who. My kids recently got part time jobs, and trying to keep track of who is working when and who does or doesn’t need a ride is certainly more manageable with their work calendars that I created in Excel. I love it.

I’ve been using Excel for so many years and they have made some good changes over the years, and being able to add the Spelling checker icon to my Quick Access Toolbar is super helpful, but I do wish it would underline or highlight a misspelled word (like MS Word does) while I’m typing information into Excel before I click on the Spelling checker so I can see if I even need to use it or not. If I have a lot of data sometimes I’ll just copy it all and paste it into Word just so I can quickly see my spelling and/or grammar errors, then I’ll go back to Excel and make the corrects as needed.

I have been using Excel since the 90's and like how flexible the tool is. I've used it to create planners, budgets, to do lists, loan calculators, calendars, financial reports, reconciliation tools, resumes, contact lists, trip itineraries, financial models, statistical analyses, stock charts and surveys. I really love how much formatting is possible, the depth of financial functions and the number of online resources to support use of this wonderful tool. Over time, the interface and functionality has got smarter and recent versions of the software seem to anticipate your needs and offer the correct options and functions based on the context of your current actions.

There is a tendency to use Excel for everything and in some cases a database or dedicated project management tool would be more suitable to the task at hand. I've seen investment companies using Excel to monitor and report on millions of dollars of assets and personally used Excel to manage complex projects where other tools would have been much less manual. My criticisms may be due to lack of knowledge, but, I really struggled with collaboration and version control when working with an outside organization. We used the same Excel workbook and forwarded this document back and forth with updates. Manually keeping track of the versions and changes became a nightmare. I've also seen situations where you have functions referencing cells in other documents or tabs and the links can be fragile, easily broken - sometimes causing rework and potential errors.

Microsoft Excel - An Accountants Best Friend!

Everything, literally! Excel is and can be as powerful as you need it to be. For the casual user, it a wonderful spreadsheet program that you can use to track just about anything you need to. For the heavy user, with the proper training, trial and error, or simply using the "help" button, Excel has formulas, tables, and other options that will allow you to track, analyse, and present your financial information like never before. Formulas, pivot tables, and copy/pasting will make your job so much easier and cut down on the manual data entry and manual having to add number together. I've built everything from a simple electronic checkbook register to extensive financial reports that only require you to copy your financial data from your account system and paste it into excel. And without doing anything else, you can have all the financial reports that you need.

To get technical this is one thorn in my side when it comes to Excel formulas. When using an "IF" formula that states to perform a mathematical function "IF" a particular set of cells meets a certain criteria. For Example: SUMIF Column A is "greater that 1" or IF Column A is "greater than one" sum what is in "Column B". The issue I have is working backwards to identify the cells that are being added that meet the criteria. When working with the small set of data, it isn't a problem. But if you have a long list of data, it nearly impossible without have to check yourself to determine when cells makes this statement true. Again, the casual user wouldn't understand this complaint.

Still the best option we have

Opmerkingen: Overall, the cons that it provide do not outmatch the great benefits Excel can give. I don't see any other software going beyond what Excel can do, especially since it has established itself for decades now. I disagree with the fact that most Microsoft software are subscription based now, but I guess it just goes with the trend and the times. Excel has become a daily part of my life to help manage all the things that need to be accomplished both for short term and long term. As an online freelancer, I need a lot of excel sheets to track my work schedule, tasks, accounting, investments, upcoming events, just to name a few. The design is easy and intuitive. It hasn't changed a lot since its earlier versions, but I guess it comes down to the old adage: "Don't Fix What Isn't Broken". Most of its features are those available with other Microsoft applications such as Word and POwerpoint, making the ease into the software much easier.

Excel is an easy tool to learn but it is hard to master. While it can be used as a simple log, learning more about it can actually yield to more time saved as Excel can be programmed to do computations for you. That said, there are so many ways to use Excel that it can at times overload me with information, to the point that event the simplest of tasks become a little more complicated due to symbols and shortcuts, not being as clear as they should be. Excel also suffers from a similar problem that other Microsoft applications have in that they Auto Format to the point that it becomes irritating. You could waste some of your time trying to correct figures in your Excel sheet if it suddenly starts to believe that your info is a date and acts on its own will.

I have been studying science for almost 6 years (my bachelor + my master) and I always need the help of Microsoft Excel when it comes to working with data. The software might not be the easiest when you use it for the first time, but once you understand and learn more of it, you will see how useful it actually is. I do a lot of research projects at my university and I always have to collect data for different purposes and subjects. After the collection of data, I always enter them on an Excel sheet orderly. It is very easy to insert my data into an Excel sheet for further calculation. What I personally think is when your data is too big, Microsoft Excel is the best software to deal with the problem. What I love most about this software is it incredibly saves my time. Because, I do a lot of calculation after having my data sorted on an Excel sheet. Excel does very complicated calculations in a considerably short time period that would probably take me days if I did it manually with my calculator. Last but not least, it enables me to create graphs and diagrams based on what my data shows. It is very helpful to analyze my data and present it clearly.

What I like least about this software is it is not smart enough to detect the errors that I might have done while entering my data on an Excel sheet. Especially it sucks when the software does automatic calculations with my data and since there might be some errors, I might end up with an incorrect result (e.g., graphs, diagrams) that is unacceptable in the case of science. I would also argue that automatic graph suggestion by the software (assumed based on my data) is not always correct. Sometimes I am suggested a diagram, for example, that does not make sense at all. I personally think Excel's ability to create graphics and diagrams is less accurate than the other software like R programming language.

At work it helps me track open and close dates of events and programs, as well as help keep my budget on track. I even use its Alignment/Orientation function to print the names on graduation certificates. That one is a life saver! I also create calendars with Excel to help me remember reoccurring announcements that are posted only few times each semester, but not always on the same day/date (other calendar tools do not work as well for this).
At home I use Excel to help me organize everything from names on a gift registry to costs and supplies for family birthday parties and Christmas wish/shopping lists.
I use Excel every semester to help me organize the kids hectic school, sports, and activity schedules so we don't leave anyone without a ride or babysitter! (Color coding is especially helpful with this one.)
And now that the oldest is in college and working part-time, I also use Excel to create an easy to read (and follow) college class and work schedule that I post on the fridge and family bulletin board so we all know when and where he is M-F (so we aren't bugging him if he is in class or at work).
Believe it or not, I even use it to help me and my family track such things as household tasks/duties and even which new Fall premiers are airing first so we don't forget to set up the DVR. I use it literally every day.

Pluspunten:

It is more versatile than you can imagine. I use it at work and at home almost every day. I use it for so many tasks that go far beyond what a normal table or spreadsheet program could do. It is my go-to place for creating tables, calendars, lists, rosters, budget charts, food and calorie logs, shopping/grocery lists, and I could go on and on.

Minpunten:

I wish Excel would identify misspelled words within the cells as you are typing. Rather than having to remember to go find the spellchecker and use it each time.

Opmerkingen: I love excel. It is easily one of the most underrated software programs in the world in my opinion. People like to talk about spreadsheets all day long, but give credit where credit is due. MS Excel is the only "spreadsheet" in the world if you ask me. Not only can you use it for basic functions, but you can calculate with it, you can graph data with it, and so much more. I am likely still what most would call a "beginner" user of this software, even though I have been using it for decades, and I find it helps me to accomplish tasks and track data in such an easy way. I love learning to use the functions. There is an entire world of possibilities with it. For anyone thinking "its just for spreadsheets and organizing", you are wrong. I see a lot of new technology and software in my role, but I always count on Excel to make my job, and my life, easier to manage.

Pluspunten:

Easy to use. From basic to next level functions, you don't have to be a computer whiz to figure it out. If you ever have a question, search the help function. If you want to do something complex and don't want to read help article after help article, just google it. Everyone uses excel, or at least they should, and someone out there has done what you are trying to do. Simple design. I do not need fancy graphics and displays when I am trying to accomplish a task...I just want to get my job done. Excel is a hit for me. Straight and to the point. Capable of so much more than you could ever imagine.

If there is something missing from Excel, I haven't found it. In fact, I think you would have to be an engineer to find something that excel cannot do for you. It's not going to build you a website and it likely can't do your taxes for you (at least not out of the box); but if data is your world, if organization is your world, and excel can't help you accomplish the task, you probably shouldn't be using a computer at all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
